Maari Gethu Lyric Video Review: A Character Defining Song

Maari 2’s “Maari Gethu” lyric video is out. And it’s a power packed song.

Exciting folk music with kuthu (dance) stills of the Maari’s gang is what makes the video. The song begins with the sounds of typical music band in North Madras, and feels festive. It sounds similar to the song “Thappathan theriyum” from the earlier Maari film, where all the people from the area come together in a celebration.

This song “Maari Gethu” is like an introduction to the character, or to be more precise, defines Maari’s character. It says how famous Maari is, who he is and how he behaves. The words like Thani kaatu Raja and Yaar edathula yaaru scene’a podradhu will make the audience connect it to the earlier film as it gives a one second glimpse for the people to remember who Maari was. He is the man who is dangerous as your enemy, but will give all if he’s your friend.

The video also features stills of Sai Pallavi, Krishna, Robo Shankar and Kalloori Vinoth dancing along with Dhanush. The song has a line of dialogue by the actor Krishna, who asks Dhanush, Maari, nee nallavara kettavara? (Maari, are you a good man or bad?)

This ties back to the first film with the dialogue in which Maari says Naa kalapadamana nallavana irukaradha vida, Suthamana kettavana irundhukren. (I prefer to be bad, rather than good)

‘Maari Gethu’ is packed with energy, and comes with Yuvan Shankar Raja’s lyiric, music and voice along with Dhanush’s peculiar North Madras slang. The words Bigilu adicha, sozhatti vecha, Sudathada vada, Sketchu mathikichu and Ooram Othu holds the song from deviating it from the usual folk songs.

Directed by Balaji Mohan, Maari 2 is produced by Dhanush under Wunderbar Films. The movie will release on December 21. Starring Dhanush and Sai Pallavi in the lead, the film also features Tovino Thomas, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Robo Shankar, Krishna, Kalloori Vinoth, Kaali Venkat and Vidya Pradeep in other roles.

Yuvan Shankar Raja is collaborating with Dhanush after almost a decade. Their last two films together were Parattai Engira Azhagu Sundaram (2007) and Yaaradi Nee Mohini (2008).
