On the occasion of International Women’s Day, veteran comedy actress ‘Kovai’ Sarala, last seen in Ajith Kumar-starrer Viswasam, joined Makkal Needhi Maiam in the presence of its founder Kamal Haasan. The MNM’s Women’s Day celebrations took place at the Chennai party headquarters in the presence of party President Kamal Haasan, Coordinator of the Women and Children’s welfare wing actress Sripriya and Chennai Zonal In-charge Kameela Nasser.

At the event, ‘Kovai’ Sarala announced her decision to take the plunge into politics, and joined the party. Speaking about why she did so, she said “Makkal Needhi Maiam might soon become ‘Magalir’ Needhi Maiam. I’m also very confident that MNM will grant women the justice that they deserve; that is why I joined MNM. Not just me, many women who believe in MNM will follow our leader Kamal Haasan. The women of Tamil Nadu are repressed, and this must be changed. We must ensure that the men in our homes vote for a party that will work for the development of women. I hear a lot of criticism about actors entering politics; but, actors who play different roles are able to empathise with the plight of the common man. They are the ones who will be able to eradicate the problems of the common man. That is why I have an emotional connect with this party.”

Meanwhile, addressing the crowd, actor Kamal Haasan said that neither his daughter nor his brother-in-law would take over the party after his time. The was an obvious dig at the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Desiya Murpoku Dravida Kazhagam. While the DMK is being led by MK Stalin, the son of late party president M Karunanidhi, the current deputy general secretary of Vijaykanth’s DMDK is LK Sudish, his brother-in-law.

This statement comes after the clash between the  DMK and DMDK regarding seat-sharing for the upcoming 2019 elections.
