Kanchana is a 2011 horror-comedy starring Raghava Lawrence, Sarathkumar and Lakshmi Rai in the lead. The movie was written by Lawrence, and was a sequel to his 2007 film Muni. Kanchana went on to become a huge hit and was remade in Kannada as Kalpana. Subsequently, a third movie in the series was made, and the fourth one is currently under production.

According to TimesNow, Shobita Dhulipala of Raman Raghav and Goodachari fame was approached for a role in the Hindi remake. Kiara Advani has now signed up for the female lead. This marks her second collaboration with Akshay Kumar. The two are currently shooting for Good News, with Akshay Kumar paired opposite Kareena Kapoor Khan and Kiara Advani with Diljit Dosanj.

In an earlier report, a source close to the movie said, “It’s not a straight remake, the basic premise will draw references from two films, Muni and Kanchana, so it’s more like two films clubbed in one to create double the impact. The team has been working on the script for over six months and has added several new dimensions to the original film.”

The movie is being planned as a revenge drama and will see Akshay Kumar play a man whose fear of ghosts doesn’t allow him to step out of the house after sunset. His encounter with a ghost who is a trans person, forms the crux of the story. The original film was appreciated for its sensitive portrayal of transgender persons.

Kiara Advani also stars in the Hindi remake of Arjun Reddy. Titled Kabir Singh, the movie features Shahid Kapoor in the lead role, and is directed by Sandeep Vanga who worked on the Telugu version.
