Kasi Yaathirai, Released In 1973, To Get A Sequel 40 Years Later

It has been raining sequels. But this one is different. News reports say that Kasi Yaathirai, a 1973 comedy film that was directed by S P Muthuraman will get its sequel. The film featured Suruli Rajan, Thengai Srinivasan, Manorama, Cho, VK Ramasamy and others.

The sequel, which comes after four decades, will be directed by director and scriptwriter Pugazhmani. Manoj Cine Combines, the FMS distributors of top stars’ movies, has bought the rights for the film. The classic film had completed 100 days in theatres when it was released.

The sequel Kasi Yaathirai 2, will have dialogues and screenplay by VC Guhanathan, who had written the story for the earlier one. Music for the earlier film was composed by the popular duo Shankar-Ganesh with lyrics by Vaali and Panju Arunachalam. Cinematography was by Babu, and the editing was by Vittal. Art direction was by Radha, though not much is known about him today. Dances were choreographed by Thangappan and Madurai Ramu. It is to be noted that Kamal Haasan worked under Thangappan as his dance assistant in this film.

Kasi Yaathirai was actually a story written for a theater play that was staged more than 300 times before it was made into a movie.

Talking about the sequel, Guhanathan told In.com that, “There are many talented writers in Tamil cinema who are underutilized till today. With Kasi Yaathirai sequel, let us hope the talents of these people will come out to the fore.” It is said that the shooting for the film will begin 6th March as the makers are planning to release the film by May 2019. It is also said that the unit plans to complete the film in one schedule.

Meanwhile a report in Deccan Chroniclesays that actress Kovai Sarala might be roped in place of late Aachi Manorama.
