Kalidas Jayaram’s upcoming movie Happy Sardar will release during Onam. The actor essays the role of a Sikh character in the film. The shooting for the movie is currently under progress.
Happy Sardar is about a Sikh boy falling in love with a Knanaya Christian girl. It is directed by the husband-wife duo Sudeep and Geethika. The ad filmmakers-turned-directors have also starred Bollywood actor Javed Jaffrey in a prominent role.
Talking to CE about the movie, Sudeep said, “We developed the subject with Kalidas in mind. It’s a fun, festive entertainer reminiscent of films like Band Baaja Baaraat and Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania.” Merin Philip plays the female lead.
Kalidas Jayaram speaks both English and Hindi in the movie. “There is a reason behind that, but as for now, we are keeping it under wraps,” added the director. Happy Sardar is the second Malayalam movie with a Sikh protagonist after Unni Mukundan’s Mallu Singh.
Javed Jaffrey, best known to the Malayali audience as the Pakistani soldier in Prithviraj’s Picket 43, stars as Kalidas Jayaram’s father in the movie. According to the director, Jaffrey’s character is both comical and serious at the same time.
Talking about the story, Sudip said, “We are basically dealing with the conflict arising from the encounter between parents from two different cultures, the dilemmas of parents who are friends to their children, and the tough choices they sometimes have to make. All of this is told through humour.”
The supporting cast of the movie includes Aanandam-fame Siddhi Mahajankatti, Sreenath Bhasi, Siddique, Shanti Krishna, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Lalu Alex, Dharmajan, and Hareesh Kanaran.
Happy Sardar is produced by Haseeb Haneef and Aji Medayil. Abhinandan Ramanujan, who worked on movies like Amen and Double Barrel, is the cinematographer on the project. Gopi Sunder has composed music for Happy Sardar.
