According to DC, the film is centred on the protagonist’s daughter who goes to the US to pursue higher education. This warranted a change in title from Hindi Medium 2. “Hindi Medium 2 was just a working title. So once the script was locked, the makers decided to keep the title according to the subject. The film now has a time and a country leap, and there will be people of other ethnicities as well. Since the film is now based in the US, it will duly be called English Medium,” said a source.

Hindi Medium, featuring Irffan, Saba Qamar and Deepak Dobriyal, was about a couple’s efforts to get their son enrolled in an English medium school. The sequel, however, will not be dealing with Indian students aiming to go to the US alone but will also be taking into account students of various nationalities planning for an education in the country.

“The film will not just address the issues of Hindi medium students in the US but also those of the students from other countries who face trouble fitting into a system where English is the primary spoken language. Keeping that in mind, director Saket Chaudhary, who helmed the first instalment, has been replaced by Homi Adajania who has directed films such as like Being Cyrus, Finding Fanny and Cocktail,” added the source.

While the lead actress for the movie is yet to be finalized, English Medium is touted to be Irffan’s comeback film since his return from London after undergoing treatment for a neuroendocrine tumour.

Director Tigmanshu Dhulia, who has directed the actor in Paan Singh Tomar, confirmed that the actor had recovered from his illness. The actor was last seen in 2018 in Karwaan.
