I’m Not The Hero Of ‘Gurkha’: Yogi Babu

Gurkha is the title of Yogi Babu’s next. The first look poster of the film was unveiled by actor Sivakarthikeyan yesterday. While Sivakarthikeyan, in the tweet announcing the film, referred to Yogi Babu as the lead actor, Babu doesn’t quite see things the same way.

In a conversation with Silverscreen, Yogi Babu said that the character he plays in the film cannot be considered the lead because it doesn’t satisfy the requirements of such a tag. “I play a watchman in the movie. Though Sam Anton wrote the movie with me in mind, it’s not a hero role. At least, not the kind of heroes I grew up watching.”

Babu says that a particular incident in the film thrusts the watchman in the spotlight. “But it doesn’t guarantee hero status. It’s a full length comedy role. That’s all I can say.”

Interestingly enough, Yogi’s spokesperson too, referred to the role as a lead one in an earlier interview with us.

“Yogi will be seen as the lead. This is his second lead role after Kolamaavu Kokila and he is over the moon. Yogi did not come to the film industry with the idea of being the lead actor. He just wanted to do roles that would guarantee a steady income. And so, for him, this movie offer is very much a surprise. He is very excited about the project,” the spokesperson said.

The first look poster has Yogi Babu standing in front of a mall (called Madras Mall in the poster). Along with him is a dog wearing sunglasses. Both of them are presumably guardians of the mall that also has a ‘Ghost Gopalan Hotel’, ‘SRK Cinemas’ and ‘Moonbucks Cafe’, a pun on the popular Starbucks chain. Curiously, there are also fire hydrants behind Yogi Babu.

Sam Anton is the director of this movie while Anthony Reuben edits. 4 Monkeys Studio is bankrolling this ‘hostage comedy’ that is set to release in the summer of 2019.
