‘Hangover’ Director Todd Phillips Roped In For Joker Origin Film

Todd Phillips, the director of Hangover, has been tasked with writing and directing a film on the origin of super villain, Joker. He will be assisted by 8 Mile writer Scott Silver.

According to a Deadline report, the intention is to make a gritty, hard-boiled origin story that ‘isn’t part of any other iteration. Jared Leto, who played the Joker in the recent Suicide Squad film, will not be a part of this story. A younger actor will be brought in, the report says.

The project is intended to be part of a still-developing label for Warner’s DC Entertainment properties that will include projects which could stand apart from the big projects that are tied to each other in a shared universe way. At this stage, the story is set in Gotham City in the early 1980s. This can pave the way for Warner to make more DC-oriented projects.

One report stated that acclaimed filmmaker Martin Scorsese was producing the project, but sources say that his involvement is yet to be confirmed.
