Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Rape Case: Dera Sacha Sauda Chief Found Guilty

Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh has been convicted of rape charges by the CBI court in Panchkula. The sentencing hearing will be on August 28.

The court’s verdict in the case against the 50-year-old Dera chief has come after 14 years.

In 2002, a Dera sadhvi wrote an anonymous letter to then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee saying she was raped by Ram Rahim Singh. In the letter, the sadhvi also accused him of raping several other female followers inside the Dera campus, which lies on the outskirts of Sirsa in the state of Haryana.

The investigating agency questioned 18 sadhvis and two of them leveled allegations of rape against the spiritual leader. One of the sadhvis said in a statement that when she entered his chamber, the door automatically closed and she found him watching a pornographic movie on a big screen.

The CBI is said to be banking heavily on this statement as only a few have access to that chamber.

Sensing mayhem at the time of the verdict today, columns of army personnel reportedly moved into Panchkula early this morning. Around 53 companies of the paramilitary forces and 50,000 personnel of the Haryana Police were deployed in the states of Haryana and Punjab.

At present, shops, ATMs, cinema halls, and petrol pumps located near Dera headquarters in Sirsa remained closed.

Apart from being known as a spiritual leader and philanthropist, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh is also known for acting in five Hindi movies and is the pioneer of the MSG: Messenger of God series of films. His last film Jattu Engineer released in May this year.

With his supporters threatening to “wipe India off the map”, here are some reactions on Twitter to his conviction:
