‘Gully Boy’ Trailer Review: A Classic Underdog Story On Mumbai’s Streets

The trailer of Gully Boy builds on the visuals of the teaser that released earlier this week. Directed by Zoya Akhtar, Gully Boy is inspired by real-life incidents and is based on the lives of the Mumbai based hip-hop artistes Divine and Naezy.

Ranveer Singh, who mostly had a straight face through the teaser, is seen in more dramatic sequences in the trailer. We see his character’s emotive side, and that is also because the supporting characters and his relationships with them get featured here.

If the trailer is anything to go by, the movie is a classic underdog story of a guy braving all odds to achieve his dream. The makers couldn’t have come up with a better tagline than ‘Apna Time Aayega’ to capture this.

Even though this is a familiar theme, and a real-life story, the trailer manages to make us curious about the film. One of the reasons for this is the music. Adding to Ranveer Singh’s rap which we heard in the teaser, we hear the electric ‘Apna Time Aayega’ track here.

Hip-hop artiste Divine had said about the film in a video interview, “I think it’s going to help the (hip-hop) movement and I also think the album of Gully Boy will change the game.”

Jay Oza’s camera paints the streets of Mumbai like the South American favelas. In Gully Boy, it is going to be most interesting to see how hip-hop evolves in the streets of Mumbai.

“It is the story which represents Mumbai in its true sense and the city is my home town, these are my people, this is my language so this is the story I am really attached to. It’s an underdog story about a kid who broke through from great adversity in life to make it as a recording artist,” Singh had said in a News18 article.

Gully Boy stars Alia Bhatt, Kalki Koechlin and Vijay Raaz. The movie has been produced by Zoya Akhtar’s Tiger Baby Productions and Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Shidwani’s Excel Entertainment.

The movie was recently selected for the 69th Berlin Film Festival scheduled to be held between February 7 and February 17.
