‘Gully Boy’ Teaser Review: Ranveer Singh Raps On The Streets Of Mumbai

“My time will come,” says Ranveer Singh at the end of Gully Boy’s teaser. But one look at his performances of the previous year will say that the actor has already done his fair share of waiting. Keeping aside the fact that his performances in the movies got him unanimous praise, Padmaavat became the second highest grosser of the year while Simmba is en route to join the list of highest grossing movies of the year.

But Gully Boy is not so much about Singh, as it is about the Mumbai based hip-hop artistes Vivian Fernandez a.k.a Divine and Naved Shaikh a.k.a Naezy. Hip-hop is a cultural movement that began in the west during the late ‘70s. Its two major facets include rap and graffiti which have come to be used by marginalized groups world-over as modes of dissent and expression.

Barring a few song sequences, Singh, playing the role of Divine, sheds his trademark animated quality reserved for Alia Bhatt’s feisty Zoya, and sports a calm demeanour.

The teaser also features Kalki Koechlin as a lead, who, in a brief scene, is shown to have romantic inclination for Singh. To do justice to the title, the teaser takes us through the rustic streets of Mumbai. However, the highlight of the promo is Singh’s rap that runs parallel to the visuals.

Announced back in February 2018, Gully Boy is directed by Zoya Akhtar, and jointly produced by her Tiger Baby Productions and Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Shidwani’s Excel Entertainment. Music has been composed by Shankar Ehsaan Loy.

The movie was recently selected for the 69th Berlin Film Festival, to be held between February 7 and February 17.

Gully Boy releases on February 14.
