Set in the Calicut district of Kerala, Gambinos, much like the American gangster family, is about a family that deals with crime and drugs. Radhika Sarath Kumar, voiced by Bhagyalakshmi, plays the matriarch of the family.
Instead of introducing the characters one after other, the trailer narrates the incidents through the eyes of Mustafa Ahmed, the youngest and seemingly estranged member of the family, who is being interrogated by the police.
The trailer hints at Ahmed turning a whistleblower after becoming disillusioned and disappointed with the ways of his family. The brotherhood and the righteous young sibling somehow reminds the viewer of Amal Neerad’s Iyobinte Pusthakam starring Fahadh Faasil, which itself was inspired by Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s The Brother’s Karamazov. The sprawling isolated mansion inhabited by the family only adds to this.
Directed by Gireesh Panicker Mattada, a former assistant to director Vinayan, Gambinos is unable to shake off the feel of a mafia story with the presence of a consiglieri-like character. The trailer also contains the routine talk about the importance of family and the lengths one would go for its wellbeing.
Apart from Radhika Sarathkumar who returns to Malayalam after Ramaleela, Sampath Raj, another Tamil actor, plays a pivotal role. Having played prominent roles in Sagar Alias Jacky Reloaded and Kasaba, the actor was last seen opposite Prithviraj in Oozham.
Vishnu Vinayan, son of director Vinayan, plays the protagonist Mustafa Ahmed in the movie. Sijo Varghese plays the role of an inspector. Salu K George, Sreejith Ravi, Musthafa and Neeraja are the other actors in the movie.
Written by Sakkir Madathil, the movie has been inspired by true events. The first look of the movie was shared by Mammootty. Music has been composed by Jakes Bejoy who is best known for his work in Ranam and Dhruvangal 16.
