Director Prashanth Varma has confirmed the sequel to the multi-starrer Awe, the 2018 film that was a box-office hit and won two National Awards. Kajal Aggarwal is likely to play the protagonist once again and talks are on with Vijay Sethupathi to join her for the sequel.
In an interview to the Times of India, Prasanth Varma confirmed, “Yes, it is officially in the works. I’m ready with the script. We intend to take the Awe franchise forward with the sequel.”
Kajal Aggarwal has been approached once again, and the director said she was impressed with the script but is yet to sign the agreement. Talks are on with Vijay Sethupathi to play an important role. “Unlike Awe, this film will not feature too many actors but we plan to release it in many languages,” he said.
He added that the story will be completely different from the original. “The screenplay and storyline will be heavy and intriguing. Unlike part one, which had multiple stories running parallel, this film will have just one story. But rest assured, it will be a crazy experiment; something that has never been explored in Telugu cinema before.”
Awe, a psychological thriller made in Telugu, starred Kajal Aggarwal as the main lead, along with Nithya Menen, Regina Cassandra, Eesha Rebba, Srinivas Avasarala, Priyadarshi Pullikonda and Murali Sharma in supporting roles. The film followed the lives of different characters and the connection between them. Nani co-produced the film with along Prashanti Tipirneni. He also lent his voice to one of the characters. The film won the National Awards for Best Special Effects and Best Make-up Artist, and was a commercial success as well.
Meanwhile, Kajal Aggarwal has a number of films under production, including Call Centre, a film directed by Teja and one with Santhosh Srinivas in Telugu, and Paris Paris, Suriya 39, Indian 2 in Tamil.
Vijay Sethupathi has Sanga Thamizhan, Laabam, Kadaisi Vivasayi, Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy, Maamanithan, Uppena, and a biopic on Muttiah Muralidharan under production.
