Now, a source has told Silverscreen that one of Rajinikanth’s bank accounts has been frozen by the Income Tax Department a few weeks ago as the superstar failed to pay the Advance Tax to the extent that he had paid last year.

Advance tax is income tax that is paid in advance instead of lump-sum payment at year end. It is also known “as pay as you earn” tax. These payments have to be made in installments as per due dates provided by the IT Department. Salaried, freelancers and businesses, liable to pay tax of Rs 10,000 or more in a financial year, are expected to pay the Advance Tax.

Rajinikanth’s lawyer Bharat Ram remained unavailable for comment despite repeated attempts.

Last year, the Madras High Court had ordered the Chennai Corporation to ensure that Latha Rajinikanth’s shop is vacated if she fails to comply with the new rent rates. The premises is used to run a travel agency.

Latha Rajinikanth had filed a petition stating that the rent was increased without any prior explanation. The HC, however, dismissed the petition and directed the civic body to take possession of the property if the rent was not paid within 30 days.

The Ashram School was also in the middle of a legal dispute over rent agreement.
