According to a report in The Hindu Tamil, the director said, “There are rumors that the Telugu remake will be about their love story from college days. But this is not true. The beauty and life of the script is in its school days love. So there are no changes in the core plot of the script, but a few small changes have been made… Even as Dil Raju sir bought the remake rights, we decided to just replicate the same theme with few a nuanced changes to suit the Telugu audience.”

’96 is love story directed by debutant C Premkumar. It released before Deepavali, and went on to become a huge hit. Even though it was telecast in channels soon after its release, the film completed its 100th run in the theatres recently. ‘96 had its share of controversies, but found takers everywhere, and is now being remade in other south Indian languages.

The Telugu version of the film was announced earlier. Samantha and Sharwanand will play Jaanu and Ram, the characters played by Trisha and Viay Sethupathi in the Tamil original. Premkumar, who directed the original, will return as the director for the Telugu version. Music for the film is by Govind Vasantha, who had also composed for the earlier film.

Meanwhile, a report suggests that Kannada actor Ganesh of Gaalipata fame may play the lead in the Kannada remake of the film. Said to be directed by Preetam Gubbi, the film is likely to start rolling later this month. The female lead is yet to be finalised for this remake which will be titled ‘99 as opposed to ‘96. However, there has been no confirmation on this.

’96 which rode on a wave of high school nostalgia, proved to be a hit with the audience after its script and music was critically and commercially successful. The film featured Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha in the lead, and also starred Bagavathi Perumal, Devadarshini,  Jankaraj, Kaali Venkat and Aadukalam Murugadoss.
