Ban on ‘Kalavani 2’ Lifted; Film Releases Today

Kalavani 2 Movie Stills Starring Vemal

The Madras High Court ban on Kalavani 2 was lifted yesterday after the film’s director-producer Sarkunam settled all pending dues with co-producer J Jayakumar. The Vemal and Oviya starrer will release today as planned.

In a letter to the digital cinema projection company Qube Cinemas, Sarkunam clarified that all payments and dues have been settled and the complainant Jayakumar has produced a no-objection certificate. He has also filed an application with the Madras High to withdraw the case. The negative rights of the film have been transferred to Screen Scene Entertainment, the film’s distributors.

The film faced two Madras High Court stay orders and multiple controversies. Jayakumar, the co-producer and financier of the film, approached the Madras High Court on June 3 stating that the director borrowed an amount of Rs 67.38 lakh for the film and signed an agreement saying the money would be returned a week before release. The agreement said that Jayakumar was entitled to 20 per cent of the film’s profits in addition to 20 per cent interest on the borrowed amount, and decisions pertaining to the sale, assignment, license and all rights should be taken with approval by Jayakumar.

The case was heard by Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana who ordered an interim injunction and asked Sarkunam to respond to Jayakumar’s allegations of non-payment by July 10. Sources close to the director said in reports that the film’s release will not be pushed until then and Sarkunam will settle all dues with Jayakumar before release.

The film started production in mid-2018 and was complete by April this year. However, it could not release as a stay order was obtained by producer Singaravelan who filed a case against Vemal saying he owed him Rs 4.3 crore, which was borrowed to complete Vemal’s projects, including Kalavani 2. While Sarkunam said his film was being affected because of the dispute, Singaravelan maintained that Sakunam was involved in the matter because Vemal borrowed the amount to complete his film.

The sequel of the 2010 sleeper hit Kalavani, also stars Saranya Ponvannan, RJ Vigneshkanth and others. Bookings are open in all theatres, and the film will release this weekend along with Raatchasi, Kaadhal Munnetra Kazhagam and Ennaku Innum Kalayanam Aagale in Tamil.
