La La Land has swept some of the major award categories at the 70th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA). However, the evening saw many winners, a far cry from the La La Land domination critics had expected to happen. Lion and Manchester by the Sea got their share of limelight at the Bafta. One film that surprisingly went unnoticed is Moonlight.
The Ryan Gosling-Emma Stone musical, directed by Damien Chazelle, was predicted to break the 1971 record set by The Sundance Kid – which won nine awards. La La Land came nowhere close to the record, but it bagged key awards including Best Film, Best Actress for Emma Stone, Best Director for Damien Chazelle, Best Cinematography, and (no surprises there) for The Best Music.
Emma Stone thanked director Damien Chazelle as she received her award. “This country – and the US, and the world – seems to be going through a bit of a time, just a bit. In a time that’s so divisive, I think it’s so special we were able to come together tonight thanks to Bafta, to celebrate the positive gift of creativity and how it can transcend borders and how it can help people to feel a little less alone.”
Casey Affleck took home the Best Actor award the role of a grieving handyman in the drama Manchester by the Sea. The actor was clearly ecstatic at the win as he said, “The room looks very different from here. My heart is beating.”
British-Indian actor Dev Patel, bagged Best Supporting Actor for his role in Lion as he said, “the win was overwhelming.” Viola Davis was presented the award for Best Supporting Actress for Fences and she is in the running for the same nomination at the Oscars as well.
