‘2.0’ To Release In China, Date To Be Confirmed

2.0 Movie Stills Starring Rajinikanth

Rajinikanth-starrer 2.0 will be out in China as 2.0: Resurgence. While several reports said that the film will release on July 12 in over 50,000 screens, reliable sources say that this has not been decided and a confirmation from China is yet to come. The film released in India in November 2018, in about 10,500 screens.

A source close to the film told Silverscreen, “This has not been announced officially because we are yet to get the dates from theatres. Rumours have spread and even reached Rahman sir who tweeted about it. In China, the government decides when a film will release because all theatres are owned by them. We are awaiting the dates from the government, and nothing can be speculated now. We will announce officially once the confirmation reaches us.”

The Chinese poster for the film released recently, and AR Rahman also shared it this morning. He later tweeted another poster featuring Rajinikanth and the film’s villain Akshay Kumar, and said it will release in 56,000 screens across the country, and premiere on June 28.

Indian films are hugely popular in China, and the big Bollywood movies reportedly release in about 5,000 screens and also get popular because of the piracy circles.

Dangal is the highest grossing Indian film, and 3 Idiots, PK, and smaller films like Secret Superstar, Hichki and Hindi Medium earned really well at the Chinese box-office. Andhadhun recently crossed the Rs 300-crore mark. Director Suseenthiran announced that his upcoming Tamil film Kennedy Club will release in China, and Ajith Kumar-starrer Nerkonda Paarvai may also be out in the country.

If reports about 2.0 releasing in 50,000 screens are true, it will be the biggest release for any foreign language film in China. The mega-budget science fiction film was directed by Shankar and released in Tamil, Hindi and Telugu last year. It starred Rajinikanth as the scientist Vassegaran and robot Chitti. Amy Jackson played the female lead. Cinematography was by Nirav Shah and music by AR Rahman.
