Serndhu Polama Review: Together Without A Cause

Abhi (Vinay Rai) meets Julie at a florist. When Abhi talks to Julie in Tamil, she says in heavily (phony) accented Tamil,  “Oh, neenga Ta-mil-ah? Because this happens in New Zealand, see.

Abhi by now has fallen for her, so he convinces her to let him drive her around the city. He takes her to her friend’s place, where she invites him in. Asks him to make coffee for her. Then, she asks him to help zip her dress.

He does. Naturally.

*****

For the first hour, Serndhu Polama does not drop a hint about what kind of film it is. A musical, like the promos said? A thriller? A rom-com?

There are no hints after the first hour either.

*****

There are two heroines, and both do the diva-hair-flip when they are introduced. Like this. And as if to stay true to their staged entries, their performances stay unreal too. Abhi is apparently a photographer, so he is shown taking photos using an old Sony camera as a teenager.

And, everybody’s lip-sync is haywire.

Thambi Ramaiah wears colourful shirts and a hat that reads ‘Jack Daniels’.  He speaks flawless English and has several flings on the same day. Not sure if the two are connected.

There is also Thalaivasal Vijay. He is always behind objects. A billing counter. A dining table.

And, the locations are beautiful. Tranquil sea, clear sky, and long, winding roads. Some solace!
