India Pakistan Review: Laughing Matter, This

There must be something incredibly alluring about Vijay Antony. Atleast to debutant filmmakers. Is it that stoic face? The production house that bears his name, maybe? Or is it just his willingness to back the most implausible scripts..ever?

This secret ingredient, whatever it maybe, has taken Vijay Antony from a successful music career to a decent acting career, despite being lampooned everywhere for having, well..a face that barely moves.

A D V E R T I S E M E N T

Not necessarily a bad thing, if you believe this report.

Despite having Vijay Antony in the lead role, India Pakistan depends to a large extent on the other Vijay to get things going. The movie beats SAC’s Touring Talkies hands down for having the most Vijay references possible. Gimmicky, yes, but it works to a large extent; as evidenced by screaming, frenzied fans. In Sathyam, no less.

Comedy aside (even the unintentional bits), the film doesn’t have much to offer the audience in terms of plot. There’s a love story, yes, but nothing we haven’t seen before. It follows the romcom template quite faithfully, some songs sprinkled in at strategic points to prop up the romance and a wee bit of action to keep things interesting. Vijay Antony succeeds in his efforts to keep his face wrinkle free and it’s left to Sushma Raj and the rest of the supporting cast (including an awesome Jegan and Pasupathy) to make up for his acting skills or lack thereof.

The laughs sustain the film’s first half; but the movie meanders along in dangerously predictable territory in the second half. While hardened film fans might be able to sit through the two and odd hours of this film, it is going to take more than just an act of sheer will to watch Vijay Antony wear a Chinese robe and mock fight with his lady love. If that’s your thing, then by all means, go for it.
