Writer and assistant director Varun Rajendran has reportedly filed a complaint against Sarkar. According to sources in the film industry, Rajendran has alleged that the story of the Vijay-starrer directed by AR Murugadoss is a blatant copy of his own. He had written a script titled Sengol and registered it with the Writer’s Union in 2007. Rajendran came to know of the story of Sarkar recently, and noticed that there were many similarities with SengolThis prompted him to meet Bhagyaraj, President of the Writer’s Union. Rajendran is said to have spoken to the Union representatives and asked them to intervene in the matter.

Attempts to contact Varun were in vain.

Bhagyaraj, when contacted, confirmed that a petition had been submitted. “We are looking into it and are trying our very best to do the right thing for both people concerned.”

A spokesperson for the film and its actor Vijay said he was unaware of the issue. “As of now, we haven’t received any such news,” he said.

This is second time that AR Murugadoss has been accused of using someone else’s story for his film. At the time of Kaththi’s release, Minjur Gopi (Gopi Nainar) accused Murugadoss of having plagiarised his script. The accusations were not proved, and Kaththi went on to release as planned.

Gopi then went on to direct the Nayanthara starrer Aramm. The movie released in 2017.

Meanwhile, AR Murugadoss has issued a strict warning to the junior cast and crew of Sarkar. The director has asked them to not give interviews to the media without the consent of the team. He has said that strict legal action would be taken if the cast and crew engaged in any kind of media interaction unauthorised by the movie team.
