Writer and comedian Mariah Smith has apologised for her article in New York Magazine‘s ‘The Cut’. She said that she did not intend to hurt anyone, and does not condone racism, xenophobia or sexism. Her article had called Priyanka a ‘global scam artist’ for marrying Nick Jonas. It was later pulled down by the magazine after an apology.
Smith had remained quiet since the story came out on December 4. Yesterday, she tweeted: “I want to sincerely apologize to Priyanka Chopra, Nick Jonas, and to the readers I offended and hurt. I do not condone racism, xenophobia, or sexism. I take full responsibility for what I wrote, and I was wrong. I am truly sorry.”

On Wednesday, the magazine issued an apology saying the story didn’t meet their editorial standards.

In her article titled “Is Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’ Love For Real”, Smith wrote that Priyanka married Nick for her own gain.
She said that Jonas, who rose to fame as a member of the band ‘Jonas Brothers’ in the late 2000s, had a “fraudulent relationship against his will” with Priyanka, and that he simply wanted a “fling with Hollywood’s latest It Woman” but instead found himself “staring straight at a life sentence with a global scam artist.”
The article faced severe backlash online. Smith was called a racist and sexist for accusing Priyanka of wanting to rise to fame by marrying an American celebrity, ignoring the fact that she has already been high up in the ranks since 2003.
Nick’s brother and former bandmate, Joe Jonas, tweeted that the article was ‘disgusting’, and said The Cut should be ashamed to have allowed someone to write such evil words.

Indian celebrities and Priyanka’s friends too, called out the article. Sonam Kapoor said that the website had a lot to answer for, and added, “It’s written by a woman which is so sad. It reeks of envy and bitterness.”

Arjun Kapoor, who acted with Priyanka in the 2014 film Gunday, called the article ‘tacky and uncouth’, and said he was certain that Jonas wasn’t kidnapped and forced into the marriage.
