Actor Vijay Sethupathi’s Seethakathi is scheduled to release on October 5, director Balaji Tharaneetharan revealed in a conversation with Silverscreen earlier today. “We are planning to release the film on the 5th, but we are not sure how the movies will be slotted. We will officially announce the date within a week,” he said. The film stars Vijay Sethupathi in dual roles, one of them being a septuagenarian theatre artiste.
Produced by Passion Studios, Seethakathi also stars Archana of Veedu fame, who plays wife to Vijay Sethupathi, while actresses Parvatii Nair, Remya Nambeesan and Gayathrie will be seen in cameos. It is also said that the film will feature veteran director J Mahendran as the antagonist. While Vijay Sethupathi had earlier played an elderly man in Orange mittai, the actor has used prosthetic make-up for the first time in this film. A video documenting the 41-year-old actor’s journey to Los Angeles, to the studio of Oscar-winning make-up artiste Kevin Haney and Alex Noble, where he underwent hours-long make-up process to turn into an old man with wrinkled skin and bulked up cheeks, was also released last month.
Earlier, it was speculated that the film was based on the Tamil scholar, saint and philanthropist Seethakathi who lived in the 1650s; however the director clarified that the tale revolves around theater artists and is in now way related to the poet.

Govind Menon, who had also composed music for Vijay Sethupathi’s romantic drama 96, directed by Prem Kumar, has scored the tunes. Apart from 96, Vijay Sethupathi is also a part of Mani Ratnam’s multi-starrer Chekka Chivantha Vaanam, Rajinikanth’s film with Karthik Subbaraj, Super Deluxe directed by Thiagarajan Kumararaja, and a yet-to-be titled film directed by Seenu Ramasamy. There’s also a project with director Arun Kumar, and a Telugu film Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy, starring Chiranjeevi in which Sethupathi plays a Tamil king.
Balaji Tharaneetharan had earlier directed Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom, based on the experiences of cinematographer Premkumar.
