Vidya Balan will star with Ajith Kumar in the Tamil remake of Amitabh Bachchan’s Pink. Producer of the film, Boney Kapoor, has confirmed her participation in the project.
Since October last year, there were rumours that Ajith’s new movie, tentatively titled Thala59, would be a remake of the 2016 courtroom drama Pink. This news was confirmed last month with a formal announcement in Chennai. The movie is directed by Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru director H Vinoth.
Boney Kapoor has said that Vidya Balan will play a pivotal role in the film. Talking to Mid Day, he said, “I wouldn’t call it a special appearance. There are certain changes that the director has incorporated to suit the Tamil market, and Vidya’s character has been written accordingly.”
A source close to the movie said that Vidya Balan eagerly lapped up the offer as she was close to the producer, and the roles of Kirti Kulhari and Andrea Tariang from the original will be played by actors from the south.
It was earlier reported that Nazriya Nazim may reprise Taapsee Pannu’s role, and Rangaraj Pandey might play Piyush Mishra, the advocate who the advocate against Amitabh Bachchan in the original movie. Adhik Ravichandran will play one of the three main antagonists in the film.
Earlier, in a statement about the film, producer Boney Kapoor said, “While working with Ajith in English Vinglish, Sridevi had expressed her desire to make a Tamil film with Ajith for our home production. Nothing exciting came up till one day last year. Ajith suggested a remake of ‘Pink’ in Tamil.”

“She (Sridevi) immediately agreed saying it was the most appropriate and timely film to make, and Ajith would bring all the elements required to make it into a great Tamil film,” said Boney Kapoor. Ajith and Sridevi have acted together in Gauri Shinde’s Hindi movie English Vinglish.
A small portion of the Thala59 has already been shot, the formal shoot begins on January 10. The makers have said that the movie might release on May 1, on the occasion of Ajith’s birthday.
