Director Vetrimaaran’s Visaranai will soon be dubbed in Telugu as Vicharana by producer Kalpana Koneru, who bought the theatrical rights for the film long back. The Tamil original was produced by Dhanush, and released in 2016.
The film was based on real life incidents from a book called Lock Up by M Chandrakumar, an auto driver in Coimbatore. It starred Dinesh Ravi, Anandhi, Aadukalam Murugadoss and Samuthirakani. Director Vetrimaaran was credited for bringing out the best from all the actors. The film was about Tamil migrants working in Guntur who get implicated in a false robbery case by the police, and deal with the custodial violence and corruption by people in power.
The film faced a controversy before its release when a senior IAS officer Sagayam watched the preview 10 days before its release, and said about police violence, “The unbridled powers given to police is anti-democratic and laws are needed to curtail police excesses during custodial interrogation.” This quote by him appeared in the film’s posters.
Visaranai premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2015, and was screened at many film festivals. At that year’s National Awards, Dhanush and Vetrimaaran won the Best Feature Film, Samuthirakani won the Best Supporting Actor, and Kishore Te won the Best Editing award. The film was also nominated under the Best Foreign Film Category at the 89th Academy Awards.

Soon after Tamil the film released in 2016, Rockline Venkatesh bought the Kannada and Hindi remake rights of Visaranai, along with Dhanush’s other film Vella Illa Pattadhari or VIP which released around the same time.
Meanwhile, Dhanush and Vetrimaaran’s fourth film together, Asuran, began shoot this month. As per latest reports director Balaji Sakthivel will play the antagonist in the film. The film stars Dhanush, Manju Warrier, and Ken Karunas. Music is by GV Prakash.
