Actress Varalaxmi Sarathkumar has slammed her one-time friend and actor Vishal over derogatory remarks made against her father, former Nadigar Sangam head Sarathkumar. She tweeted that Vishal’s Pandavar Ani will lose her vote in the elections to the South Indian Artistes Association (popularly called the Nadigar Sangam), because they cast aspersions on Sarathkumar in the video made for their election campaign.

She said it was shocking to see that Vishal harped on her father’s past (the pending Nadigar Sangam land misappropriation case in which ex-office bearers Sarathkumar and Radha Ravi were accused), especially when Vishal himself has not proven himself as an able leader, and when her father was not involved in the elections this time.

She said she had always been there for him as a friend, but he had taken it too far. “Everyone knows your double standards and lies. If you were such a saint, I don’t think people from your own so-called Pandavar Ani would have left and created a group to bring you down,” she wrote.

Vishal and Varalaxmi Sarathkumar have been friends for long. During the previous elections in 2015, she backed Sarathkumar and voted for him, but said that wouldn’t affect her friendship with Vishal.

In the video released by Vishal yesterday, the Pandavar Ani said the reason they were formed in the first place was because of the mismanagement of the previous office bearers. Sarathkumar and Radha Ravi’s pictures and clippings from their speeches featured in the video.

The video said that the Nadigar Sangam land was sold to private parties for personal gains, and it was in this context that the Pandavar Ani was formed under Nasser’s leadership to uphold the values and pride of the Sangam.

The land misappropriation case is still pending in court and no verdict is out yet.

The case was filed in June by Sangam general secretary Vishal alleging that Sarathkumar and Radha Ravi fraudulently sold 26 cents of the Sangam’s land at Vedamangalam village in Kanchipuram.

The matter came to light when the office-bearers were voted out, and notices were sent to them, but there was no proper response. Vishal’s team raised a complaint with the Kanchipuram police, who were reluctant to file an FIR saying the accused were influential people. An FIR was booked in June 2018, following a court order. During a hearing last month, the Madras High Court directed the police to speed up investigation and submit a final report in the next three months.

Last week, Vishal was summoned by the police to speak about the details of the case. It was reported that Radha Ravi and Sarathkumar would not be able to contest elections while the case is pending.

Meanwhile, campaigning for the elections is on in full swing with many actors organising press meets and pledging support to the team of their choice.

Recently, pictures of Nasser and Kamal Haasan were widely shared online. Following this, K Bhagyaraj, who is contesting for President against Nasser, said he consulted both Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan before deciding to contest.

Pictures of his meeting with Kamal were posted this morning.

The elections will be held on June 23 at MGR Janaki College in Chennai.
