Dhanush At The Vada Chennai Press Meet

Dhanush and director Vetrimaaran have said that Vada Chennai 2 is on and reports about the film being shelved are rumours.

Dhanush wrote on Twitter, “Unless you see any official confirmation from my handle please do not believe in rumours regarding any project of mine.”

Director Vetrimaaran told Silverscreen, “I don’t who has been spreading the news. The film is under production currently.”

About 20 percent of the shoot is said to be complete and the next schedule is expected to begin soon.

Reports speculated that the sequel has been facing problems because of an opposition from residents of north Chennai. A source told DTNext last week, “Though Vada Chennai did well at the box office, the residents of north Chennai weren’t happy about the way their lifestyle has been portrayed on-screen. Vetrimaaran is now finding it tough to shoot for the remaining sequences in the same locality. Moreover, a couple of artistes who played pivotal roles in Vada Chennai got busy with other projects. That’s why the film has been shelved.”

The original film released in October 2018. It faced protests from north Chennai residents, mainly from the fishermen and women who said they were portrayed negatively in the film. A police complaint was also lodged against the use of abusive and offensive words.

Following this, Vetrimaaran issued an apology saying he or his team did not intend to offend anyone, and removed the controversial scenes. They said the next two sequels will be a more realistic portrayal of the people of north Chennai.

The Vada Chennai series is Vetrimaaran’s most ambitious project till date. The sequel reportedly stars Aishwarya Rajesh, Andrea Jeremiah, Samuthirakani, Kishore and Ameer Sultan once again.

Meanwhile, Vetrimaaran has also announced that he will make a prequel to the film titled Rajan Vagaira. The story will centre on Ameer’s character Rajan, and may release as a web series for a digital platform. More details about this project are yet to be known.

The director is currently busy with Asuran starring Dhanush and Manju Warrier. Composer GV Prakash has completed the songs for the film. A teaser is expected to release on July 28, on Dhanush’s birthday.
