A historical drama fiction directed by Steven Spielberg, The Post is based on the true story of the Pentagon Papers leak. Meryl Streep plays Kay Graham, the country’s first woman newspaper publisher of The Washington Post and Tom Hanks plays Ben Bradlee, the editor of the paper. The film will take on how the paper fought against the government to publish news that was hidden from the public for years.

Graham and editor Bradlee first experienced challenges when they published the content of the Pentagon Papers. When Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein brought the Watergate story to Bradlee, Graham supported their investigative reporting and Bradlee ran stories about Watergate when few other news outlets were reporting on the matter.

The Pentagon Papers, officially titled United States – Vietnam Relations, 1945–1967: A Study Prepared by the Department of Defense, is a United States Department of Defense history of the United States’ political-military involvement in Vietnam from 1945 to 1967. The papers were released by Daniel Ellsberg, who had worked on the study; they were first brought to the attention of the public on the front page of The New York Times in 1971.

The film also stars Sarah Paulson, Bob Odenkirk, Tracy Letts, Bruce Greenwood, and Zach Woods as Daniel Ellsberg.

The film hits select theaters on December 22 before going wide on January 12, 2018.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali Says Padmavati Upholds The Honour Of The Rajputs

Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, following widespread criticism against his yet-to-release film Padmavati, on Wednesday said the film upholds the honour of Rajputs and does not depict anything that may hurt anyone’s sentiments.

A post on the official Twitter handle of Padmavati, read:

In an accompanying video link, Bhansali, who has so far refrained from commenting much on the controversy, says: “I’ve made this film Padmavati with a lot of sincerity, responsibility and hard work. I have always been inspired by Rani Padmavati’s story and this film salutes her valour and sacrifice. But because of some rumours, this film has become a subject of controversy.

“The controversy is over the fact that the film has a dream sequence between Rani Padmavati and Alauddin Khilji – something that I have already denied even in written. Now through this video, I am reiterating that in our film, Rani Padmavati and Alauddin Khilji have no such scene together which hurts anyone’s sentiments. We have made this film with a lot of responsibility and have kept the pride and honour of the Rajputs in mind.”

The movie, which is being called an epic historical drama, features Deepika Padukone as Rajput queen Rani Padmavati, Shahid Kapoor as her husband Rawal Ratan Singh and Ranveer Singh as Delhi Sultanate ruler Alauddin Khilji.

It is slated to release on December 1. But the film has been mired in controversy ever since it was in the midst of being shot, over alleged distortion of facts.

Bhansali was attacked at the Jaipur set of the film by activists of Rajput organisation Shri Rajput Karni Sena. Later, a set of the film in Kolhapur was vandalised and set on fire.

Karni Sena representatives have been voicing concerns over the film’s release, and Sarv Brahmin Mahasabha has protested against its release too. Some political leaders are of the view that the makers must show the film to historians.
