TM Krishna’s Comments On MS Subbulakshmi Draw Sharp Criticism

Noted Carnatic music vocalist TM Krishna, speaking at a recent event, said that MS Subbulakshmi, who came from a Devadasi background in Madurai over time had dissociated herself from her roots to conform to the notions of an ideal Brahmin woman to find acceptance in society, something that is prominent in her songs of the 1960s and 70s.

According to the Deccan Chronicle, he said, “To embrace Brahminism she distanced herself from her brother and family in Madurai and that is the sad part.”

His comments drew sharp reactions from all quarters, including some of his peers:

The title of the Telugu version of Suriya’s Thaanaa Serndha Koottam is Gang. The film is directed by Vignesh Shivan, with music composed by Anirudh Ravichander. Apart from Suriya, the film stars Keerthy Suresh, Suresh Menon, Ramya Krishnan, and Senthil. The teaser was released a few days back.
