Yesterday, Acham Yenbadhu Madamiyada star Silambarasan issued a press statement declaring his support for Jallikattu. STR, who has never been shy of speaking his mind about issues he supports, said he spoke not just as an actor, but as a “son of the soil”. Jallikattu is described by many Tamilians as one of the oldest Tamil traditions and the pride and honour of Tamilians. In January, the Supreme Court upheld a ban on the festival, traditionally held during Pongal.
Simbu said in the statement,”Jallikattu is the cultural symbol of our state and it is our pride too. We have been practicing this art of valour for years, and it is utterly disgraceful when some groups and individuals manage to misguide and misinform the authorities of the governance and judiciary on this art that is considered as cultural symbol of our state.
“When there are many issues that seeks the intervention of the administrative and judicial systems on priority basis, why this issue of abolishing Jallikattu is on the fore front I wonder. Jallikattu is not only a game that portrays the Bravery of Tamil People; it also protects our Indian cattle breeds too.
“But due to the Ban of Supreme Court, Jallikattu was not happening for the past two years. We abide by the regulations of this country as a citizen of this country, but never at the cost of our cultural identity. Imposing a law against the popular sentiments of a particular state can never be a binding factor. I trust and bank hopes on the wise men at the helm to intervene and sort out this issue once for all.

Actor Arya was recently criticised for jokingly tweeting ‘What is Jallikattu’, with many Tamilians mocking him on Twitter. The 32-year-old actor eventually clarified that he meant no malice with the question.
