Akshay Kumar will star in Rohit Shetty’s new film Sooryavanshi as an anti-terrorism squad chief. The movie, jointly produced by the director and Karan Johar, is slated for release during Eid 2020.
Shetty and Karan Johar, who previously collaborated for Simmba, teased the viewers by offering a glimpse of Sooryavanshi in the Ranveer Singh starrer Simmba. Akshay Kumar made a cameo appearance as Veer Sooryavanshi towards the end of the movie.
The makers formally announced the movie by releasing the first look poster with the tagline ‘A Bullet For A Bullet.’ With Sooryavansh, Rohit Shetty has created a Marvel-like police universe comprising of characters Bajirao Singham and Sangram Simmba Bhalerao.

The makers have scheduled the movie for an Eid release. It is noteworthy that Eid is usually when Salman Khan releases his movies, like Bharat for this year’s Eid. Khan has not announced any movie for 2020 Eid yet. Incidentally, Sooryavanshi is also the name of a 1992 Salman Khan starring horror film.
The female lead of Sooryavanshi is yet to be announced. As Akshay Kumar has a number of projects including Good News and Mission Mangal lined up, it will be a while before Sooryavanshi goes on floors.
Meanwhile, Akshay Kumar is currently awaiting the release of Kesari, based on the battle of Saragarhi. Directed by Anurag Singh, who is best known for directing Dil Bole Hadippa! and Jatt & Juliet, the film is bankrolled by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions.
The Battle of Saragarhi was fought before the Tirah Campaign on September 12, 1897 between Sikh soldiers of the British Indian Army and Pashtun Orakzai tribesmen. The British Indian contingent had 21 Sikhs who were stationed at an army post, and attacked by around 10,000 Afghans. The Sikhs, led by Havildar Ishar Singh, fought to death, in what is considered as one of history’s greatest last-stands.
