“When Sindhu won the Olympic medal, I thought of making a biopic on her and started researching. Reading about her journey – she would travel 50 kms daily to the badminton camp from her home to practice – I was motivated to make this film,” he told The Times of India. The two met at the Times Of India Sports Awards (TOISA), where Sindhu won the Sportsperson Of The Year award.

Titled Sindhu, the actor felt a biopic on the sportswoman would be perfect for youngsters. “Sindhu’s parents – father PV Ramana and mother Vijaya – were professional volleyball players. While Vijaya was a national level player, Ramana was part of the Indian team that won the bronze at the 1986 Asian Games. Sindhu opted for and excelled in badminton, is an Arjuna Awardee and also a Padma Shri. So, I think a film like this will inspire youngsters, more so girls, to pursue their dream in sports and make the country proud,” he said.

While he hasn’t divulged who would play Sindhu in the biopic, he has, however, reassured that talks are on with a few actresses for the same.

On the other hand, PV Sindhu herself is excited about her biopic. Speaking to ToI, she said, “I’m honoured and pleased to know that Sonu has decided to make a biopic on my life. I’m very impressed with the thorough research that his team has done for the last eight months.”

Incidentally, a biopic on her coach P Gopichand was in the pipeline until last year. Soon after Sindhu won the silver medal at the Olympics, producer Abhisek Nama was quoted as saying that National Award-winning director Praveen Sattaru would direct a Hindi-Tamil bilingual on the coach.

The film will not just focus on his journey on court, but will also show glimpses of his personal life, he said. The project was scheduled to go on floors in November last year, to be shot across Hyderabad, Lucknow, Bengaluru and Birmingham. However, as of January this year, the project starring Sudheer Babu, is still in the pre-production stage.
