The first look of Peranbu, which has wowed the festival circuit was finally released yesterday, after delays caused by technical issues. Starring Mammootty, Anjali, Sadhana and Anjali Ameer, the film by director Ram has been in the making for quite some time. It has earned accolades at the Shanghai International Film Festival and Rotterdam International Film Festival, where it was a contender for the NETPAC award. This is awarded to the best Asian feature film by a jury from the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema.

Besides introducing the film’s principal characters and the setting, the first look also revealed that the audio will be launched on July 15th. Music has been composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja, with lyrics by Vairamuthu, Karunakaran and Sumathi Ram.

Mammootty plays Amudhavan and Sadhana Paappa, while Anjali steps in as Viji. A lot more about the film and its story will be revealed when the teaser is out.

Producer PL Thenappan says that the film is not just meant for the festival-and-award circuit, but has something for every kind of audience. “I can say confidently that Peranbu will traverse all art film and commercial film delineations. It has a wholesome appeal that will definitely strike a chord with the audience.”

Plans are on to release the film later this year. The team is hoping to go on a promotional tour, says the producer. “We will announce it sometime soon. Talks are on with the cast and crew to finalise the dates.”

Transgender artiste Anjali Ameer makes her acting debut with this film. “Peranbu does not cash in on this factor. Anjali is an artiste, first and foremost, and that is what fetched her the role,” Thenappan says.

“It was Mammootty who suggested Anjali’s name,” Ram had earlier told Silverscreen. “He saw her talking to a Malayalam news channel. She was selected for the role after an audition in which she performed really well. She plays an important character in the film, the details of which I can’t reveal now,” he said.

Peranbu had its world premiere at the International Film Festival of Rotterdam earlier this year.
