Elections for the South Indian Artistes Association, or the Nadigar Sangam as it is known, will take place on June 23 at MGR Janaki College in Chennai, from 7am to 5pm. The Sangam office in T Nagar will be open to everyone for queries and complaints.

Retired judge E Padmanabhan, who was appointed recently, will preside over the elections. A notice issued by thr union  states the posts for which candidates can contest, and notes the eligibility criteria including payment of membership fees between 2013-2019, no outgoing dues, payment of election deposit, etc.

The present office bearers – Nasser, Vishal Krishna, Ponvannan and Karthi will contest for the posts of president, general secretary, vice president and treasurer once again. Their opposing side is yet to be decided and announcements will be made soon, said sources.

The Nadigar Sangam elections are a highly publicised event. Nasser, Vishal, Ponvannan and Karthi were elected to power for a three-year term in 2015. However, they extended their term by almost a year due to the new Sangam building which is yet to be completed. The inauguration for the building was slated for March 2019, but the construction faced many hurdles and legal roadblocks that led to a delay.

Meanwhile, Vishal recently met Radhika and Sarathkumar, raising curiosity because they are likely to contest from opposing camps this time too. It was reported that Radhika might contest for president opposite Nasser, backed by Sarathkumar and Radha Ravi. T Rajendran and STR were also reportedly considering contesting. However, actor SVe Sekhar clarified that the news was false. The former office bearers of the Sangam, Sarathkumar and Radha Ravi cannot contest this election while the land misappropriation case in which they have been accused is pending. Earlier this month, the Madras High Court ordered the Kanchipuram police to complete investigation on the case and submit its report in three months.

As of now, it is known that actor Udhaya, who campaigned for Vishal last elections, will be contesting against him for the post of general secretary because he is not satisfied with Vishal’s performance.
