Director-writer Muhsin Parari’s next film, titled Thallumala, will be produced by director-producer Aashiq Abu and actor Rima Kallingal. The film, starring Tovino Thomas and Soubin Shahir in the lead roles, is co-written by Ashraf Hamsa who directed Thamasha (2019).
This is Parari’s second directorial, after KL10-Pathu (2015), a romantic comedy. He was involved in the writing of acclaimed films such as Virus (2019) and Sudani From Nigeria (2018). Virus was directed and produced by Aashiq Abu. In 2018, he won a Kerala state film award for the best screenplay for Sudani From Nigeria.
Thallumala is known to be a comedy set in Ponnani, a coastal town in Kerala’s Malappuram district. The title is a hat tip to the Mala genre of Arabi-Malayalam songs, written in praise of Sufi saints or about spirituality.
Musician Sushin Shyam, who worked on Virus and Kumbalangi Nights this year, will compose the music for Thallumala. Editor Saiju Sreedharan, yet another regular collaborator of Aashiq Abu, is also part of the project. The film is set to release in theatres by September 2020.
Both, Tovino Thomas and Soubin Shahir were part of the cast of Virus, although they didn’t appear in any scenes together. Tovino, who has already had five releases this year, is currently working simultaneously in over six projects. His next immediate release is Edakkadu Bettalion 06, directed by Swapnesh Nair, which will hit the screens on October 18.
Soubin Shahir, who was named the best actor in Kerala state film awards in 2018 for his performance in Sudani From Nigeria, has a horde of projects in the later stages of production. Vikruthi, which has him starring in the lead role, released in theatres on October 4. Android Kunjappan Ver 5.25, directed by Ratheesh Balakrishnan Poduval, is getting ready for release.
