‘Mazhai Kuruvi’ & ‘Bhoomi Bhoomi’: Two Songs From ‘Chekka Chivantha Vaanam’ Released

Two songs – ‘Bhoomi Bhoomi’ and ‘Mazhai Kuruvi’ – from Mani Ratnam’s Chekka Chivantha Vaanam were released earlier today. Shakthishree Mohan’s breathy vocals take on a rock edge in Bhoomi Bhoomi. The four-and-a-half minute song has minimal orchestration. The focus is clearly on Shakthishree as she sings; the lyrics by Vairamuthu talk about the cacophony of sounds that drown out the sweet call of the kuyil.

From what the poster design for ‘Mazhai Kuruvi’ suggests, the song is filmed on Silambarasan who plays Ethi, the youngest (and unwanted) son of Senapathi, and his partner, Chaaya (played by Dayana Erappa). AR Rahman takes on the mantle of the singer for this almost six-minute long song that makes use of violins and the guitar to establish the mood. The similarities to AR Rahman’s work on ‘Maahi Ve’, a song in Highway, cannot be ignored. Both tracks begin the same way, and traces of the arrangement in ‘Maahi Ve’ find their way into Mazhai Kuruvi as well.

The mood is solidly upbeat, and the lyrics are sometimes cryptic, as AR Rahman unleashes his light-hearted self and sings of leaving the nest and finding true love, only to return yet again. Perhaps a hint of things to come in the movie?

As always, fan reactions to the songs on social media have been mostly positive. Interestingly, ‘Mazhai Kuruvi‘, with its romance tag, finds more takers than ‘Bhoomi,’ which is a little darker in mood.

Chekka Chivantha Vaanam stars Arvind Swami, Silambarasan, Arun Vijay, Vijay Sethupathi, Jyothika, Aishwarya Rajesh, Aditi Rao Hydari and Dayana Erappa in the lead. The film also features Jayasudha, Thyagarajan, Mansoor Ali Khan, Prakash Raj and Cheenu Mohan in pivotal roles.

The film’s music is composed by AR Rahman, cinematography is by Mani Ratnam’s long-time associate Santhosh Sivan and lyrics are penned by Vairamuthu. The film is scheduled to release on September 28; the trailer for it was released last week.
