The Madras High Court has issued an interim ban on the release of Vemal and Oviyaa starrer Kalavani 2 once again. The film was scheduled to release on July 5.
The director-producer of the film, A Sarkunam, has been facing financial issues pertaining to repayment of loans, and that has been affecting the release of the film.
Jayakumar, who is co-producing the film with Sarkunam, reportedly approached the Madras High Court today stating that the director had borrowed an amount of Rs 67.38 lakh for the film’s production and signed an agreement saying the money would be returned a week before release. The agreement also said that Jayakumar was entitled to 20 per cent of the film’s profits in addition to 20 per cent interest on the borrowed amount.
With two days to go for release, Sarkunam has not returned the amount, alleged Jayakumar. The case was reportedly heard by Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana at the Madras High Court this afternoon. The Justice ordered an interim injunction on the film and asked Sargunam to submit a response to Jayakumar’s allegations before the next hearing on July 10.
Sarkunam was unavailable for comments. This copy will be updated if he responds.

This is the second time an interim injunction has been ordered against the release of the film. In April this year, producer Singaravelan obtained a stay on the film’s release and filed a case against actor Vemal saying he owed him Rs 4.3 crore, which was borrowed to complete Vemal’s projects, including Kalavani 2. After months of controversy, Sarkunam released a video saying his film was being affected because of the dispute between Vemal and Singaravelan. Sources close to Singaravelan told Silverscreen that Vemal had borrowed the amount to complete Sarkunam’s film, so the director could not say he was not involved.
The controversy was cleared after Vemal met Singaravelan and signed an agreement saying he would work in two movies for the latter’s production house within 2019, in return for the money borrowed.
The Madras High Court lifted the ban in May. Actress Oviya announced the release date as June 28, but the film was further pushed, reportedly due to non-availability of screens.

The film is a political satire and the story takes off from where the previous film left. Saranya Ponvannan reprises her role as Vemal’s mother, and RJ Vigneshkanth plays his friend. Ilavarasu, Ganja Karuppu, Vinodhini Vaidhynathan and others have important roles.
