Kanaa Trailer Review: Where Farmer Father and Cricket Playing Daughter Dream Big

Seeing her father’s sorrow after India loss in a cricket match, Kousalya – a school going girl takes it upon herself to play cricket and win matches for her country only to see her father happy. This seemingly far-fetched yet novel-sounding idea forms the crux of Kanaa.

Starring Aishwarya Rajesh in the lead role, the trailer of Kanaa begins in a village and takes the protagonist as well as the viewers all the way to stadiums hosting international matches, thereby confirming that she makes it to the international circuit and not keeping that reveal till the release of the movie.

Running throughout the trailer is a background score that constantly guides the viewers’ emotions and ultimately gives way to the rousing title track of the movie composed by Dhibu Ninan Thomas.

Writer-director Arunraja Kamaraj also makes some interesting observations in the trailer. To prove the male dominance in the game, he uses the example of how only boys emerge as second generation cricketers from cricketing households. Producer Sivakarthikeyan, who has a  cameo in the film, also makes an appearance in the trailer to impart inspiration to Aishwarya’s character.

The trailer also briefly touches upon the perils of not knowing Hindi while venturing into a national level sport. It also shows the practical difficulties a girl has to go through while setting out to be a cricketer.

The trailer consists of multiple shots showing a determined Aishwarya Rajesh. It’s a testament to the actor’s talent that this doesn’t get repetitive. Sathyaraj plays Rajesh’s farmer-father in the movie. He gifts her a hand-crafted cricket bat as a kid and also an India jersey.

Primarily a lyricist and also an actor, Arunraja Kamaraj has been known for the lyrics he wrote for the title song of Rajnikanth’s Kabali. Kamaraj makes his directing debut with Kanaa. Dinesh Krishnan handles the cinematography of the movie that has been produced under the banner of Sivakarthikeyan Productions.
