Kanaa Teaser: Aishwarya Rajesh Bats For The Cricketing Dreams Of Young Women

Arunraja Kamaraj, known for singing the popular ‘Neruppu Da’ song from Kabali, is making his directorial debut with Kanaa – a sports drama focusing on women’s cricket.

Produced by Sivakarthikeyan, the teaser was unveiled on Thursday. The film has Aishwarya Rajesh in the lead. It revolves around a girl who dreams about becoming a cricketer.

The teaser starts with a voiceover asking if anyone has seen a girl play cricket in a village. There are visuals of a young girl learning how to spin a ball, amid men telling her that cricket is not a good option for a woman. There’s Sathyaraj also in the film, who plays Aishwarya Rajesh’s father. He is also a farmer who is heard talking about the agriculture sector and farmer suicides. In the teaser, Aishwarya is seen practicing on the field and leading a women’s cricket team.

Sivakarthikeyan is likely to have a cameo in the film and he has also sung the track ‘Vayadi Petha Pulla’ along with his daughter Aaradhana.

Ahead of the film’s teaser launch, the film’s director had put up an emotional post thanking his friends and well-wishers.

The music has been composed by Dhibu Ninan Thomas and also features a song by Anirudh Ravichander. The song is pegged to be a folk number comprising of a mix of piano and strings and traditional instruments like Thakil and Nadaswaram. The lyrics have been penned by the director himself.

The title Kanaa which translates into ‘dream’ in English comes with the tagline ‘Dream Big’. Speaking about the film, Arunraja said, “I have done a lot of research on this subject. I have observed that while 1,000 boys attend cricket division selection matches, only 60 girls come forward for the women’s cricket division matches. My script will throw light on the struggles of one such courageous woman. Though it is a sports-based film, it is an emotional drama of a father and a daughter, who aspires to become a cricketer.”

Aishwarya, who was trained for 60 days in cricket to prepare for the role, will soon be seen in Vikram-starrer Saamy Square and Vetrimaaran’s Dhanush-starrer Vada Chennai.
