‘Jinn’, ‘Virus’ And ‘Android Kunjappan’ Among Soubin Shahir’s Upcoming Films

Although Soubin Shahir’s recent release at the box-office, Oru Yamandan Prema Katha, a comedy where he played a supporting role to Dulquer’s protagonist, received a lukewarm response from the audience, the actor is associated with some of the most interesting projects in Malayalam this year. Shahir, who won the Kerala state film award for Best Actor in 2018 for Sudani From Nigeria,  started this year on a high note, with Kumbalangi Nights, a critical and commercial succcess about a dysfuctional family. His performance as the eldest of the four brothers in the slice-of-life drama directed by Madhu C Narayanan, set the bar high.

He is playing a pivotal role in Aashiq Abu’s Virus, a thriller based on the Nipah virus outbreak that shook Kerala in 2018. The film’s cast includes Revathi, Indrajth, Kunchakko Boban, Parvathy, Rima Kallingal, Poornima Indrajith, Joju George and Tovino Thomas. Produced by Aashiq Abu and Rima Kallingal, and written by Muhsin Parari, Suhas and Sharfu, Virus releases in theaters on June 7.

Soubin will also be seen in Anwar Rasheed’s big-budget thriller Trance. Not much is known about the multi-starrer headlined by Fahadh Faasil, which has been in production for over two years. Soubin will also play one of the lead roles in Joothan which marks the return of veteran filmmaker Bhadran to Malayalam cinema. His co-stars in the film are Rima Kallingal and Joju George. The film’s trailer released on internet on April 26.

Actor-director Siddharth Bharathan announced his next project on social media yesterday. In the film, titled Djinn, Soubin plays the lead role alongside Nimisha Sajayan. The film is written by Rajesh Gopinadhan who wrote Kali in 2016.

Currently, he is shooting for debut director and acclaimed production designer Ratheesh Balakrishnan Poduval’s Android Kunjappan Ver 5.25 in Saint Petersburg in Russia. The film, a comedy, is produced by Santhosh Kuruvila.

He is also working in Ambili directed by John Paul George, the first look poster of which was released in March, and Santhosh Sivan’s Jack N Jill where his co-stars are Manju Warrier and Kalidas Jayaram.

Soubin started off his film career as an assistant director to filmmakers such as Faasil, Siddique, Amal Neerad and Rajeev Ravi, made his directorial debut with Parava in 2017. The film, a slice-of-life drama centred on a bunch of youngsters in Kochi’s Mattanchery, was a box-office success. As an actor, he rose to fame after playing the jovial Krispin in Maheshinte Prathikaram (2015), a movie that changed the course of Malayalam mainstream cinema by re-introducing to it a form of realism – a keen eye for detail, and portrayal of characters and milieu with little exaggeration – which was in vogue in the latter half of 80s, popularised by filmmakers like Sathyan Anthikkad. It is known that Soubin will soon start his second directorial, featuring Kunchakko Boban in the lead role.
