A modern retelling of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s Devdas is all set to release on February 16 next year, helmed by filmmaker Sudhir Mishra. The film titled DaasDev is a reverse take on Devdas’ story featuring Rahul Bhat in the titular role, Richa Chaddha as Paro, and Aditi Rao Hydari as Chandramukhi.
Set against the backdrop of modern politics, the film is pegged to be a romantic thriller where Dev manages to liberate himself and achieve a sense of nobility. Speaking to IANS, Mishra said:
“Ultimately it became a film about power as it gets in the way of love. It became a reverse journey because if Devdas is a journey from a noble person to a ‘das’, this is a journey from ‘das’, a person who is a slave to his addictions and the dynastic ambitions of his family, to Dev.”
Describing his other characters, Mishra said that Paro is a woman who fights with weapons while Chandramukhi is as close to the original character set in this age. The film is presented by Storm Pictures.

Set against the backdrop of the Emergency, the movie tells the story of three young people in the 1970s, when India was undergoing massive social and political upheaval. The title is taken from a poem by Urdu poet Mirza Ghalib.
