The Chennai Police have registered a criminal case against actor-politician Karunas for criticizing Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami and Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam during his speech in Valluvar Kottam on Monday. The AIADMK MLA went reportedly missing after the case was filed.

Earlier, on Monday, while addressing party cadres in Valluvar Kottam, he said, “You can even commit murder. But do so after informing me. There should be justification for that [the murder]…” He also advised his cadres to openly reveal their identities if they were to throw stones at their opponents. He also claimed that while he belongs to the Mukkulathors community, commonly known as Thevars, his loyalties stand with the Sasikala camp. He also referred to Panneerselvam as a ‘disloyal’ member of his community who had flocked to the EPS camp.

According to The Hindu, the actor also claimed that the Palaniswami-led government could not have formed without his presence in Koovathur resort. He reportedly said, “I only showed them the Koovathur resort [where the MLAs, showing allegiance to Sasikala, stayed], saying that it will be difficult to escape from the place as it is surrounded by water. Can anyone deny this?”

He also criticized the media stating that the press was owned by the Iyers and the Nadars and also criticised Deputy Commissioner of Police, T. Nagar P. Aravindan.

Later, he told Puthiya Thalaimurai that he did not intend to hurt anyone or any community. He said, “I only pointed out that certain media houses are making mistakes. I didn’t speak against any community… I express my deep regret if my words have hurt anyone. I will make sure it doesn’t happen again. As far as I am concerned, I only spoke about the demands of my community. It is not my intention to demean and speak ill of others.” He also reiterated that he is not hiding anywhere and is at his Saligramam residence.

Following his speech, VG Narayanan of the Hindu Makkal Katchi, the Tamil Nadar Sangam and a few other outfits met the Chennai Police Commissioner A.K. Viswanathan seeking criminal action against the actor. A case was registered by the Nungambakkam Police and the MLA has been booked under various sections of the IPC, including criminal conspiracy, promoting enmity, promoting disharmony, attempt to murder and issuing death threats.
