Veteran Bollywood actor Kader Khan died in Canada yesterday. He was 81, and had been admitted in hospital for a prolonged illness.
The actor’s son Sarfaraz said in an IE report, “My dad has left us. He passed away on December 31 at 6 pm as per Canadian time due to prolonged illness. He slipped into coma in the afternoon. He was in the hospital for 16-17 weeks.”
“The last rites will be performed here in Canada only. We have our entire family here and we live here so we are doing it. We are thankful to everyone for their blessings and prayers,” he said.
Khan had been suffering from Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, a degenerative disease that causes loss of balance, difficulty in walking and dementia for some time. He was hospitalized after he complained of breathing difficulties and the doctors shortly shifted him to the ventilator.
Kader Khan was born on October 22 1937, in Kabul. He made his acting debut in Rajesh Khanna’s Daag in 1973. Since then has starred in over 300 films. Khan’s career was at its peak during the 80s and 90s, when he began collaborating with David Dhawan and Govinda. His last films were Ungli, Lateef, Hogaya Dimaagh Ka Dahi and Aman Ke Farishtey.

Apart from being an actor, Khan was also a screenwriter with more than 250 films to his credit. He used to regularly collaborate with Manmohan Desai and Prakash Mehra. His films with Desai include Dharam Veer, Ganga Jamuna Saraswati, Coolie, Desh Premee, Suhaag, Parvarish and Amar Akbar Anthony. Along with Mehra, he has made Jwalamukhi, Sharaabi, Lawaaris, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar.
Kader Khan is survived by his wife Hajra, his son Sarfaraz, his daughter-in-law and grandchildren.
