62nd National Film Awards: Winners from Tamil cinema

The winners’s list of 62nd National Film Awards was announced this afternoon. The jury, that included filmmakers Bharthiraja and Bhagyaraj, revealed the names at a press meet.

Karthik Subbaraj’s Jigarthanda has bagged two national awards: Vivek Harshan for Best Editing and Bobby Simhaa for Best Supporting Actor. Vivek Harshan has been chosen for his ‘skillful editing’ while Bobby has been honoured for his ‘engaging portrayal of a dreaded don’. Director Vijay’s Saivam also won two awards – Utthara, daughter of singer Unnikrishnan, bagged the Best Female Playback Singer award, while Na Muthukumar has received the Best Lyrics Award. Quite like her father, who won the National Award for his first song Ennavale Ennavale from Kadhalan, Utthara has won for her debut song.

Two yet to release films – Bramma’s Kuttram Kadithal and Manikandan’s Kaaka Muttai have won awards. The former has been selected as the Best Tamil Film. It’s produced by JSK Corporation, who won a National Award for Ram’s Thanga Meengal last year. Kaaka Muttai, produced by Dhanush and Vetrimaaran, has been recognised as the Best Children’s Film. Interestingly, both the films have debutant directors at the helm. The child actors of Kaaka Muttai, also debutants- Vignesh and Ramesh – have been chosen as Best Child Artists.

Producer Dhananjayan’s book Pride of Tamil Cinema has received a special mention for Best Writing on Cinema.

Na Muthukumar won the National Award last year too, for the song Anandha Yaazhai from Thanga Meengal. Except the lyricist, Dhanush and Vetrimaaran, all the other winners are first-timers.
