This week, we focus on three Hindi releases of completely contrasting genres – Babumoshai Bandookbaaz, A Gentleman, and Qaidi Band.
The three releases of varying genres with one of them comprising of newcomers — it’s hard to say which ones will get to be the big box-office winner this weekend. Of course, Ajith’s Vivegam already released on Thursday.
Here’s a quick guide into choosing which of the three films sound more appealing to you.

With all the controversies that surrounded Kushan Nandy’s film, many forgot what the story could be about. Starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Bidisha Bag, Shraddha Das, and others, the film gives us a slightly Gangs of Wasseypur-like vibe, especially since Nawazuddin is seen with a gun most of the time.
The film faced its share of trouble with the CBFC led by Pahlaj Nihalani, after he demanded 48 cuts in the film. He had allegedly uttered the infamous line: “You are lucky I am not banning your film!” after a special screening.
The film was recently cleared by the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal (FCAT) with eight “minor and voluntary cuts”.
The film also has its share of catchy numbers, especially with the “item number” Ghungta, among other songs.
A Gentleman
A gentleman
Duo Raj and DK, the directors of A Gentleman, call their film an action film made on the budget of a romantic comedy. Speaking to IANS, they said: “The game is different here. We have made an action film in a budget of a rom-com and that is possible if you budget your film smartly. In this film, we did not have a lavish budget but we tried to find ways to recover money as soon as possible.”
Going by the trailer, the film is also about how Jacqueline Fernandez’s fun character falls in love with the meek Sidharth Malhotra, only to see him turn into a suave spy with a killer body. There are plenty of action sequences, too, in this rom-com.
In a recent interview, Sidharth said that he had to learn a lot of hand-to-hand combat techniques to prepare for his role. Named Risky Rishi, Sidharth in the film will essay a double role.
Jacqueline, on the other hand, would be seen in a more substantial role compared to her previous projects.
The film also stars Suniel Shetty, Darshan Kumar, Kushal Panjabi, and Supriya Pilgaonkar. The music is composed by duo Sachin-Jigar.
Qaidi Band
Qaidi Band
Qaidi Band, directed by Habib Faisal of Ishaqzaade fame, is the story of undertrials who, instead of rotting in prison, choose to express their angst and freedom with music. Coming-of-age, patriotism, and lots of friendship is explored in this film comprising of a whole new cast.
The story, as seen in the trailer, talks of the formation of Qaidi Band — translated to the Prisoners Band. These undertrials, instead of being free, get embroiled in politics, even though their song ‘I am India’ goes viral on the Internet.
The film introduces a new Kapoor boy — Aadar Jain plays the lead. The film is also bankrolled by Yash Raj Films.
Last month, Aadar was officially introduced to the world through a series of tweets on how he belonged to a family of actors and was born to do this. Needless to say, it didn’t go down too well in social media, where he had to even clarify that he wasn’t just another product of nepotism several times.
Vivegam

Director Siva’s Vivegam, starring Ajith, Vivek Oberoi, and Kajal Aggarwal, released on Thursday — a day before usual releases. In this, Ajith plays a spy and fights terrorism and lots more, with music scored by Anirudh Ravichander.
