Weekly Roundup – Tharai Thappattai launch, KV Anand interview & more (July 13 to 19, 2014)

The awards season wound down last week and cast a pall of gloom over tamil film fans. No more celebrity (read..actress) performances to look forward to, no more cute ‘posing with awards’ selfies to go Awww over and definitely no more drama. Or so we thought.

Monday Was All Bala. And Manobala.

On Monday, two of Bala’s films were launched. His directorial Tharai Thappattai starring Sasikumar and Varalxmi Sarathkumar went on the floors. The as yet untitled A Sarkunam directorial (produced by Bala’s B Studios) was also kickstarted with a small pooja function.

Also, the Sathuranga Vettai team had an impromptu press meet  where they all wore white and made a lot of puns. And rhymes. Balaji Saktivel joked that the film was not just a showcase film, but a suitcase film, and director Lingusamy joined in the fun by telling us that Thirrupathy Brothers’ N Subhash Chandra Bose has a good ‘nose’ for scripts.

Tuesday: Samantha and Shruti. But Really KV Anand.

Tuesday was the day Twitter got broken. Twice. Kaththi actress Samantha Ruth Prabhu began it all by posting a group selfie with actors Vijay and Sathish. The picture whipped the fans into a frenzy, but the best was yet to come. In her Q&A session with fans, actress Shruti Haasan revealed various important details like her favourite ice cream flavour and her relationship status. She also made a more important announcement, something we have known for a very long time.

Silverscreen Special of the day: Anegan director KV Anand spoke to us about his wife, his life and a lot of things in between in Man of the moment. An interview we are proud of.

Also, mania of the Anjaan kind happened. The tracklist for the film was released and made all Suriya fans happy.

Wednesday: Suriya And Madhavan. Also, Pretty Women.

Wednesday was Suriya’s day. The shooting for Masss began in Chennai at the middle of the night. Very appropriate, considering the movie’s theme – supernatural with a twist of humour Venkat Prabhu style. The much awaited audio launch for Anjaan was cancelled due to ‘location permission’ issues.

There was some interesting news in store for Madhavan fans as well. The actor’s boxing flick Irudhi Chutru began this week and will have the retired chocolate boy play a brawny and beaten up boxer. How’s that for an alliteration?

Silverscreen Special: Actress Sanchita Shetty along with models Arti Anirudha and Pradhayani Sarvothaman launched a beauty parlour in the city and in the process, became Silverscreen favourites. Like really.

Thursday: Well I see Girls

The Vijay Sethupathi – Arya starrer Purampokku finally began in Chennai after a long break. The people who’ve seen the set tell us that it rivals the infamous Chandralekha set, and will have over 600 people working on it. Also, news of Rajinikanth falling ill on the Lingaa sets was leaked on Twitter. The movie’s director KS Ravikumar had to issue a stern denial for it all to die down!

Silverscreen Special : Sathuranga Vettai director H Vinoth told us about a new breed of actresses – the ‘Well, I see’ girls, and of course, his debut film on In Your Face.

Friday: Giving up Titles, Getting Them. And A Great Interview. What’s new?

STR gave up his title, AR Rahman received yet another doctorate – this time from the Berklee School of Music and two big movies released on the same day – Velaiyilla Pattathari starring Dhanush and Amala Paul and Sathuranga Vettai. Also noteworthy is the fact that both films have been helmed by debutant directors.

Special : Velaiyilla Pattathari director Velraj tells us everything we need to know in A Photographic Memory.

Saturday: Kamal launches. Siddharth Announces. Trisha Joins.

Kamal Haasan’s Drishyam remake was launched on Saturday amidst claims of copyright infringement by a Bollywood producer. The Kaaviya Thalaivan team finally set a date for its audio release – July 31 and Trisha joined the Ajith 55 shooting spot.

Two of the new releases this week – Velayilla Pattadhari and Sathuranga Vettai generated a lot of buzz on Twitter. And most of it was positive.
