The Game of Thrones (GoT) season finale is a talking point everywhere. As if the countless deaths, rape, and torture weren’t enough, they had to kill off one of the few remaining guys we all liked. (Oh all right, mildly liked.) Well, if you’re like most of us, just looking for a safe place to hide from the harsh realities of the world, then rest assured. There’s always Tamil cinema. Our filmmakers would never betray their poor, innocent viewers the way GoT clearly loves to do. So without further ado, here’s a collection of ohmygod death sequences from Tamil films that are way better than the one the high priests of GoT unleashed upon us.
KR Vijaya, Karpagam
Who can forget the ghostly figure of KR Vijaya’s Karpagam flying eerily above her beloved spouse, doling out solace via a Vaali song? If you’re one of the rarer-beings who doesn’t remember this gem, we forgive you (after all, watching GoT does have some serious side-effects on its audience). Karpagam is killed by a ‘raging bull’, and to make matters worse, her friend Savithri takes over her spot in her husband’s affections. Fodder for a future GoT episode perhaps?
Gore Factor: Middling
Arjun, Kuruthi Punal
There’s much blood and gore spilt over the course of this PC Sreeram directed film, but still, watching Arjun’s character get killed is definitely less frustrating than watching Theon Greyjoy’s, ahem, dismemberment.

Karthik, Mouna Raagam
It is always upsetting to watch the uber charming-Manohar die in the arms of Divya (Revathy). But it can’t compare to the heartache caused by GoT. Let’s just say that the day the puppy-faced Jon Snow was murdered in an Et Tu Brutus fashion by his treacherous back-stabbing brothers, Twitter could have renamed itself Twi-tear. Entirely unreliable studies confirm that ‘I can’t stop crying’ was the most retweeted comment on that day.
Oh well.
Gore Factor: Sob-inducing
Aishwarya Rai, Iruvar
The former Miss World had to die, not once but twice in her first movie role. Shocking indeed, especially when you consider the lasting effect her death/s had on her onscreen lover, Anandan.
Gore Factor: Mild
Trisha Krishnan, Sarvam
Really now? After going through all those songs and mildly interesting love/relationship scenes, we have to watch Trisha’s character killed by some stray kite?
Gore Factor: I need a refund now
Vikram, Raavanan
The annoying bak bak aside, Vikram was the most endearing thing about this disastrous film. And that, of course, spelled doom for the character. Remember Manohar?
Gore Factor: Sigh. We knew this would happen
Kalaiarasan, Madras
Recommended
After the improbably long ‘will-he won’t-he die’ sequence, Kalaiarasan as Anbu gets hacked to death in front of the courthouse. Just when we all thought he was safe. The world over, sales during the interval hit a new low as audiences took time off to process the death.
Gore Factor: No popcorn, thank you
Sivaji Ganesan in Every Single Movie
Sivaji Ganesan is the best part of any movie. Let’s just admit that up front. There’s the film in which Sivaji Ganesan dies a la Jesus Christ, all shackled arms and fake blood. And then, there’s this classic scene from Karnan, in which the thespian is at his very best. Despite his eerie resemblance to a pincushion, Sivaji still acts his pants off, admiring Lord Krishna’s true form. Aaha, he says, as NTR suddenly becomes Complan Boy. I mean, Vishnu.
Kit Harrington did not get so enviable a send off. If only Melisandre had said ‘Paar‘ and become a giant Fire Goddess. That’s one opportunity they’ll never get again!
