Just when Bollywood is riding high on biopics, it looks like Kollywood has its own sweet affair with sequels. Directors are churning out sequels, bringing back films which set the cash registers ringing. While the first half of the year had some exciting sequels like Tamizh Padam 2 and Goli Soda 2, the second half too looks promising with big releases.
From Kamal Haasan’s Vishwaroopam 2 to Vikram’s Saamy Square and Dhanush’s Maari 2, here are sequels to look forward to in the second half of 2018.
Vishwaroopam 2
Kamal Haasan’s Vishwaroopam 2, which has been long delayed, is up for release this year. The sequel marks Haasan’s first film after his political plunge. The trilingual film, releasing in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi, is expected to be faster paced than the first installment. It has been written, directed, and co-produced by Haasan himself. Vishwaroopam 2 also stars Pooja Kumar, Andrea Jeremiah, Shekhar Kapur and Rahul Bose in pivotal roles.
The makers of the film recently released the film’s trailer and Haasan’s stunts promise an action-packed follow up. The sequel answers all the questions on Wisam Ahmad Kashmiri (Haasan’s character name in the film).
Talking about the film, Haasan earlier said that the movie is very faithful to the first part and not just a sequel but can also be called a prequel in some sense. He further mentioned that the first part was delayed because of various oppositions and that he will not screen Vishwaroopam 2 for anyone.
The music for Vishwaroopam 2 has been composed by Ghibran, with Shamdat Sainudeen handling the cinematography. The film will hit the screens worldwide on August 10.
Saamy Square
The sequel to Vikram’s 2013 cop drama Saamy Sqaure will reunite the actor and director Hari, after a decade.
Vikram will return as the foul-mouthed, mustache-twirling police officer in the project, which is produced by Shibu Thameens and has music by Devi Sri Prasad. It was earlier reported that Trisha Krishnan will return in the role of Bhuvana in the sequel. However, sources later revealed that the actress opted out due to creative differences. Aishwarya Rajesh was then confirmed as the female lead of the film.
Aishwarya will be seen in the flashback portions of the film while Keerthy Suresh plays the female lead. Earlier, it was reported that Vikram would reprise the character of Aarusaamy, a rigid police officer battling corruption, from the original film and the second character will be a younger Vikram, who too is a police officer.
The trailer of the sequel, which had Vikram performing high octane stunts, was heavily criticised for its misogynistic portrayal where Vikram’s character is seen slapping Keerthy Suresh. The whole scene was meant to evoke hilarity, but that did not go to plan.
The film is yet to get a release date.
Maari 2
The 2015 hit, Maari saw Balaji Mohan at its helm. The director earlier confirmed a sequel was on the cards. Maari 2 will see Robo Shankar and Vinod sharing screen time with Dhanush, again. Dhanush also shared a photograph of the script of Maari 2, confirming the news.
The award-winning film Maari (2015) had an open-ended climax, indicating that a sequel was planned. In Maari, Dhanush played a fierce, morally ambiguous don in North Madras.
Talking about Maari 2, Balaji Mohan earlier said that Maari’s character in the sequel will be an extension of the gangster role he played in the first part. He added that though the character is the same, Maari 2 will have a different plot.
In the sequel, Dhanush reprises his role of the eccentric local gangster while Sai Pallavi plays the female lead, taking over from Kajal Aggarwal. Tovino Thomas plays the villain in the film that also features Varalaxmi Sarathkumar and Kreshna in pivotal roles.
Yuvan Shankar Raja has scored score music for the film. Yuvan will be collaborating with Dhanush after almost a decade, the last two films being Parattai Engira Azhagu Sundaram (2007) and Yaaradi Nee Mohini (2008).
Produced by Dhanush’s Wunderbar Films the film will be shot simultaneously in Telugu and Tamil.

Director Shankar is back with a big budget sequel to the 2010 hit Endhiran. Going by reports, 2.0 is budgeted over a crazy Rs 400 crore, enjoying the title of the most expensive Indian film ever made.
Tau Films, of Baahubali fame, has worked on the VFX while Lyca Productions are the producers. This is Rajinikanth’s second film after he launched his political career in January. After Kaala, this film will see him going back to doing what he does best- entertaining the masses.
The film features Amy Jackson as the female lead, while Akshay Kumar, who will make his Tamil debut, plays the antagonist. 2.0 will see Rajinikanth reprise both the roles he played in Endhiran– that of Chitti as well as his creator/scientist Dr Vaseegaran.
Earlier, there were reports that a one-and-a-half minute teaser of the sci-fi drama was leaked and doing the rounds on social media.
2.0 was initially supposed to release in December last year, but was postponed to January 26. However, with PadMan releasing on the same date, 2.0 was postponed again. The film, will now release on November 29.
Sandakozhi 2

After 13 years, Vishal and director Lingusamy come together for the sequel of their 2005 rural entertainer Sandakozhi. Earlier, news about Akshara Haasan being approached for the role were doing the rounds. But the Shamitabh actress denied the rumours.
True to its title, the hero is a testosterone-fuelled man of the soil who rushes headlong into fights. Keerthy Suresh takes over from Meera Jasmine as the female lead. Raj Kiran, on the other hand, gets to reprise his role as the village elder.
The film also features Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Soori and Ganja Karuppu in pivotal roles. Recently, Vishal Krishna, the president of the Tamil Nadu Film Producers’ Council, granted permission for film’s release on Diwali this year.
