After Udta Punjab, Diljit Dosanjh’s Films Have Failed To Make An Impact: Is His Good Run Over?

Diljit Dosanjh made a stellar debut in the critically acclaimed Bollywood film Udta Punjab, but the man was not new to the cameras or fame. Diljit had earned a lot of fame, adulation and fan following in Punjab. He started out with humble beginnings in Punjab, performing in kirtans (devotional songs typically performed in Gurudwaras). Who would have guessed this singer to be associated with big films in Bollywood. And if that isn’t enough, Diljit is already considered a superstar back in Punjab thanks to his music and movies. From comedies to war-dramas and superhero flicks, Diljit has done it all and more in Punjabi cinema.

Ever since his Bollywood debut in 2016’s Udta Punjab, paired with an A-list actress like Kareena Kapoor Khan, Diljit has since shared screen space with Anushka Sharma in Phillauri and Sonakshi Sinha in Welcome To New York, in addition to the upcoming Soorma with Taapsee Pannu.

With such a flourishing career in Punjab, why did this Punjabi singer-actor decide to take a plunge in Bollywood? In the past, he has mentioned how he was inspired by Salman Khan to take up acting. Having played a serious cop in Udta Punjab, a poet and a loverboy in Phillauri and is set to appear in as hockey player Sandeep Singh in his next directed by Shaad Ali, the actor has even admitted in the past to being warned by several people about his limitations as a ‘turbaned sikh’ hero. He has also has Arjun Patiala with Kriti Sanon.

But, what made him choose a film like Welcome To New York? A sartorial choice, but could it also be viewed as an unfortunate one perhaps, given that the film, said to be a badly made spoof of Bollywood, has been critically panned by most.

Despite delivering duds after the success of Udta Punjab, studios and other filmmakers have come forward to sign him up for more projects owing to his popularity.
