From what we saw of the movie, Mahabalipuram has all the things that the city is synonymous with. Beach beauties? Check. A high weekend? Double check. A suspense thriller about a bunch of guys who’re pushed into crime?

Wait, what?

Director Don Sandy revealed at the movie’s audio launch that he would like to “exploit this misconception” about the film. “A lot of people will have a different idea about the movie when they see or hear the title. I want to use that to my advantage.”

Vinayak Mani ventures into film production with Mahabalipuram and has also essayed a very important role in it. Eagle-eyed fans may remember him from Prabhu Solomon’s football drama, Lee. And so, many actors who had worked in the film, were seen in the crowd at the launch event.

Sibi Sathyaraj, who was the hero in Lee, and is also a ‘close friend’ of Vinayak, was all praise for the film and its ‘talents’. “Mahabalipuram looks colourful and has an awesome story. Besides, I know that a guy who is as passionate about films as Vinayak, will never make a mistake when it comes to choosing films.”

Also present was Vijay Sethupathi, who just seems to be everywhere these days. He was the guest of honour and reminisced about his friendship with the film’s cast. “I’ve known Vinayak since we acted together in Lee. Ramesh Thilak is the hero of my first production, Orange Mittai. And it is for these people that I’ve come here. I’ve heard the story of Mahabalipuram and I really liked it. I hope it gets the success it deserves.”

Apart from his “launching” duties (which he took very seriously indeed), Prabhu Solomon was also of big help to the Mahabalipuram team. Producer Suresh said, “Prabhu Solomon has shaped this film, and we’re very satisfied with the final product. We thank him for his timely help and we wish his Kayal all success.” He also revealed some details about the film, “Mahabalipuram is like Salim – both movies have a social issue at its core. Its second half in particular is edgy and fast paced. There’ll never be a dull moment in this one.”

Prabhu Solomon, though, was more interested in talking about K’s music for the film. “K is truly the hero of this day. His Aathadi song will get the same recognition as Ilaiyaraaja’s Aathadi from the eighties. He’s a beautiful composer, and it takes special intelligence to arrange the kind of music that he has.”

Then, without further ado, the soundtrack was launched by Vijay Sethupathi, Keyaar and Prabhu Solomon.

Mahabalipuram stars Vetri, Angana Roy and Vithika Sheru in lead roles. Comic actor Karunakaran has a major role to play here and will be a crowd puller, the producer told us delightedly. Studio 9 Media Works has secured the distribution rights of the movie and will release it soon.
